Silver Jubilee 2008
St. Peter's Consort
Silver Jubilee 2008

St. Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent

Where the choir gave a concert during Easter week 2008

On a Wednesday evening at the beginning of October, 1983, John S. North invited nine singers to join him for the first practice of a new chamber choir.  The meeting took place in St. Peter’s Convent, Horbury, near Wakefield.  It was the first meeting of St. Peter’s Consort.

Of those nine singers, six remain in the choir:  Denise and Neil Crossley; Eileen Hulme; Ernie Lowe: and Adrian and Julie Stephenson.

No one could have thought that the group would still be meeting on Wednesday evenings nearly twenty five years later.  Over the years, new members have joined and some have left but St. Peter’s Consort remains a loyal, committed band of singers, who enjoy the friendship of each other and work hard to produce music of a high standard.

It is fitting that there were special events to celebrate the choir’s silver jubilee.

During Easter week 2008, the choir visited Belgium and stayed in the beautiful city of Bruges.

Brussels Cathedral: the national church of Belgium

Another of the venues for concerts during the Easter visit of 2008

Concerts were given in the magnificent cathedral of St. Bavo in Ghent; in Bruges in the lovely Church of Our Lady and in the glorious Cathedral of St. Salvator; and in the beautiful Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, Brussels.  The cathedral is the national church of Belgium.  The concerts were well received by audiences and were enhanced by organ pieces provided by Thomas Moore, Assistant Director of Music, Wakefield Cathedral. .

The party of 44, made up of family and friends had a splendid week: an excellent way to celebrate twenty five years of music-making and an enjoyable way to spend a week away with friends.

At the end of April, the choir gave the first of two Silver Jubilee Concerts in Wakefield Cathedral.  The excellent concert also featured the wonderful trumpet playing of Anthony Thompson.  In June, the choir gave an enjoyable concert for the Garforth Arts Festival in St. Mary's Church.  In September, the second concert to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary took place.  Another impressive evening of music-making also featured the Leeds Woodwind Trio.  Tom Moore as usual displayed his brilliant keyboard skills at both these events.

The Silver Jubilee service took place on Wednesday, 15th October in Wakefield Cathedral, followed by a Reception for invited guests in the Treacy Hall. It marked, to the month, twenty-five years since the first Wednesday evening meeting of that small band of singers, and was a fitting finale to the celebrations.
